Winter is here

Winter is finally here. Temps dipped into the high teens last night, and, for the second night in a row, the chicks water was frozen in the morning.  Earlier in the fall, I bought a heated waterer for just this occasion.  It's got a 100-watt heating element built into the base.  To conserve energy, it's controlled by a thermostat -- however, it doesn't say what temp it comes on at, so we'll see how efficient it really is.   It holds 3 gallons, so should last at least a week, as long as it stays clean.  As you can see from the picture, an extension chord plugs right into the base.  Due to the shape of the base, I only had one extension chord that would fit.  Unfortunately, it was a 50-foot medium duty chord.  Doesn't look great, but does the job.

Meanwhile, the girls don't seemed to be bothered by the cold at all.  They ran right outside this morning and have been out all day.  It's 10 degrees warmer in the coop, but the appear to prefer the sun, even though it's below freezing outside.
